2 things to consider in disputes with a business partner

Becoming a business partner with someone is a big undertaking. While there are potentially highly valuable benefits, many people almost fall into a partnership because of the circumstances without giving due thought to what could go wrong.

If you do hit a problem with each other, it is important to pause and think carefully before getting too involved or allowing the dispute to get too far advanced. Here are some things to consider:

1. What would be the personal consequences of an escalation?

You may have seen the movie about the start-up of Facebook, which ended in a big falling out. Similar things have happened to so many people who entered business together. Maybe you entered a partnership because you were best friends, or perhaps you entered with a family member.

If the dispute becomes too testy, it could break those relationships forever, and not just those particular relationships, but any associated with them. For example, if you fall out with your brother-in-law over your business partnership, it could cause problems between you and your sibling.  Your parents may have to put family Thanksgivings on hold, too.

2. What would be the financial consequences of an escalation?

If you and your business partner are busy fighting, you cannot be fully focused on running the business. That could lead to lapses which upset clients, or cause you to miss opportunities. If one of you begrudgingly has to cede ground, they may not be as motivated going forward, either.

Seeking early legal guidance can help you search for solutions that avoid such problems where possible. It can also help you fight your corner if litigation is needed.
